Day-by-Day Morocco Desert Tour Plan
Begin with pickup in Marrakech, either from your hotel or the airport. Drive through the High Atlas Mountains, crossing the scenic Tizi-N-Tichka Pass, stopping for panoramic views. Reach the famous Ait Ben Haddou Kasbah, a UNESCO World Heritage site featured in movies like Gladiator and Game of Thrones. Head to Ouarzazate, where you’ll have lunch, then continue through Skoura’s palm groves to the Rose Valley. The day ends in Boumalne Dades where you’ll spend the night.
) After breakfast, enjoy sweeping views over Dades Valley and its unique rock formations. Continue on to Todra Gorges, where red cliffs form a dramatic canyon. You can walk and take in the scenery. Then travel through the palm groves of Touroug and Tinjdad. After lunch, reach Merzouga at the edge of the Sahara. Here, board your camel and ride into the dunes, stopping to watch the sunset from a high dune. Arrive at your luxury desert camp, listen to Berber drum music, and relax under the stars. Dinner and overnight in the camp.
Wake early to experience sunrise over the sand dunes. After breakfast, return to Merzouga by camel or 4×4 where your driver awaits. Today is devoted to exploring Merzouga. Stop by an old eyeliner mine, visit a nomad family in their tent, and share Berber tea. Next, head to Khamlia village to listen to Gnawa music performed by local descendants of migrants from Mali, Sudan and Niger. After lunch, stroll through a palm grove and visit Merzouga’s wild lake—sometimes called Flamingo Lake. Dinner and overnight in a local hotel.
After breakfast, leave Merzouga for Rissani, once the capital of Tafilalet and now home to a lively market on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays. Visit a fossil workshop in Erfoud before continuing along the Ziz River, stopping for photos in the lush Ziz Valley. Lunch in Midelt. Move on to the cedar forests to see Barbary macaques—feel free to feed them. Visit Ifrane, known for snow and European-style houses. Spend the night in Fes and enjoy a free evening in the Medina.
After breakfast, your local guide picks you up for a deep dive into Fes, Morocco’s cultural capital. Start with a drive to see the Royal Palace gates, the Mellah (Jewish Quarter), Borj Sud for city views, and the Ceramic Village to see traditional pottery in action. Then, enter the ancient Medina with your guide. Visit Al Attarine Madrasa, the University and Mosque of Al Quaraouiyine (the world’s oldest university), and the colorful Chouara Tanneries. Return to your riad and relax.
We’ll pick you up from your riad and take you to Fes airport depending on your flight schedule. Your Morocco desert adventure ends here.
